Your Opinion Counts

First, it was a candidate quiz. Then it was all about A.J. Jacobs. Now, your task for week #3 in the nine weeks is to pick a reformer--because your opinion counts.

Here's what you do: after all of the reformer class presentations are done (we'll finish up on Tuesday or Wednesday), identify the reformer and his/her cause you think you would have devoted yourself to had you lived in 19th-century America, and explain why in the comments section. Oh, and one caveat: you CANNOT pick the reformer about whom you presented. It must be somebody new.

I would want to be Harriet Tubman's companion. Her intensity and strength intrigues me. Despising and hating something is one thing, but to actually try and do something to stop it, is a whole other thing. Tubman was not only against slavery, but she changed the lives of hundreds of slaves whom she helped to escape into freedom. It still amazes me that a woman did all this too, i would like to say i would do the same but i doubt i would. She is a leader and doesnt let the law or anyone stop her cause.

I would have like to live with harriet tubman simply because she was a great leader not only physically speaking but also spiritually. Harriet didnt let anybody down. When she needed to step up her game she did it. Also, it's interesting how she led many people to freedom. I dont think i would have the courage to do all those things she did.

If I had to work along side someone it would probably be Dorothea Dix, who helped with the treatment of the mentally ill. I loved how she took something that was not understood, and tried to make it better. She did not act with violence, but dedicated herself to serving others through teaching and becoming a nurse during the Civil War. Her actions also were not limited to a more enlightened group of people, but in the establishment of 32 hospitals spread across the United States.

If I had to spend a day with one of the reformers I would pick Harriet Tubman. I believe her cause which she fought for was very promising and she truly believed in what she was fighting for. I would have liked to see how she approached different situations in life and I would liked to have seen her in the moment debating against slavery. It is amazing that she was a women and especially in the 19th century it was hard to accomplish anything if you were a women. She was a strong leader who believed in fighting against slavery!

I don't want to be repetitive but I also would have wanted to be Harriet Tubman. Unlike the other reformers she grew up as a slave and I believe that because of this she had a bigger impact. She was also courageous in what she did.

I would have wanted to be with Elizabeth Cady Stanton. She narrowed her political focus exclusively to the women's right in the society.Reason why I chose her its beacuse she really changed the lives of women in United States.

I would want to be Harriet Tubman friend. I thought it was so interesting how she went to great lenths to save people she didn't even know. Also, I think it was cool how even as a woman, she had the couraeg to stand jup and carry out what she belived.

I would have dedicated my life to Harriet Tubman's cause, by helping to free slaves. Even though she risked her life every time she helped someone, she looked past that and focused on the end result which was overall helping other people to get a better life, away from slavery and the inhumane treatment.

I would like to be next to David Walker all his life because he stood up for what he believed in. He also wrote books and smuggled them into the south. He knows a lot about a lot of things.

I would have to say i would rather be Horace Mann's companion. I mean he in my opinion, made the largest impact on society which even effects the way we live now. He is so special because he has made it possible for all Americans to have an education by establishing public schools and recieving funds from the government to pay for the schools. He is responsible for the education of Americans regardless of race, or status. And to even be a part of such a long lasting great cause would be an honor.
