Jacob Riis in the House
Follow this link to read a part of How the Other Half Lives. As a reminder, bring a hard copy to class with all 6 questions answered. We will compare and contrast Riis with Upton Sinclair's work.
Well this story seems less horrifying than the story in class but the message is clear and such social commentary helps keep the people's voices heard and the politicians on their toes. A famous line I once heard, "The people should not fear their government the government should fear its people." I think these writers did a great service to their country by making people aware of their situations and I think such people should be present in every society for the further improvement of the society the observe.
Weblog manager reserves the right to delete inappropriate comments and meaningless observations. Substantive, constructive comments foster better discussion.
