Spend some time at this photo exhibit, as well as these on trench warfare (and here too), select an image that impacts you and explain why. Leave your thoughts in the comments section and/or be prepared to discuss tomorrow.
You may want to view this video about propaganda and World War I. For footage of shellshock victims, watch this.

this is interesting and it gives me a better picture of how war was fought in the trenches.

On the third link..the one in paretheses...there was a picture called sleeping under the trenches. This picture impacted me the most, because it gave me an idea about how difficult life was for these soldiers. i cannot imagine sleeping against dirt and not knowing when someone might attack. -shelby

The pictures gave me a better understanding of what it was like to live in the trenches. The soldiers were in long but compacted ditches not knowing if it would be their last time in the to laying their.

through the pictures I have realized how hard it was to fight in such a difficult war. The pictures allowed me to see the the trenches. I would have hated to have been a part of the war. I enjoyed looking at the pictures and seeing how each solider fought!

These pictures showed me the severity of the war and the huge imoact it can have on people. The picture that captured me the most was the one where the French sanitary officers were looking through the German trenches they had just captured. There are dead bodies covered in trash and the whole scene looks gross. It really showed me the unsanitary conditions of the soldiers and the large amount of death in the war.

All of these pictures have made me realize the hardship of the war. The photo that stood out to me the most was the: Belgian cavalry bringing straw to sleep on in trenches. I couldn't believe that these men were going to have to sleep on straw. It goes to show how much we take for granite in our daily lives.

the youtube video on shellshock is sad. these men lived with the fear of being bombed during war and were never able to get over it. i sure know i wouldnt be able to get over something as traumatizing as that! the picture where men are digging trenches while wearing masks impacted me the most. they had to protect themselves from gas; however, they also had to battle everyday against the enemy. the pressure of war is overwhelming!

Reading more about World War 1 helped me understand the "praise" that it is given. There where many technological advances that where a major part of this "new idea of warfare". One of the most important innovations that took place during World War 1 was trench warfare. Soldiers dug trenches (ditches) in which they hid in to prevent being seen or killed. The photos of them made me understand the overall picture of what they looked like.

The pictures depict the realtiy of war, and show us what it was like to live in the trenches. I cannot imagine living in these conditions. The soldiers did not have easy lives and they must have had a lot of pacience.

The picture that grabbed my attention the most was of the children playing trench warfare. This showed how propaganda and nationalism played a role in the youth of the countries, affecting their innocent perceptions of the recent events. It shows the way the youth of the nation views war, something to gain revenge and glory.

The image of the French periscope used by French soldiers in the trenches impacts me in the way that the picture shows all aspects of trench-warfare. The ways the soldiers were forced to live while waiting for action is horrendous. It would seem extremely difficults to have patience for that situation. The YouTube propaganda video i found very interesting as well. The video showed many examples of ads and propaganda during WWI.

The picture that impacted me the most was the Tank Attack: Second Battle of the Marne. It really shows the brutality and ruthlessness of war. It also shows that war brought about a very difficult life, one that involved fear and doubt. It also illustrates the new technology that was being produced, such as tanks and poison gas. This picture paints of vivid picture of the reality of war.

on the one in parenthesis, its interesting to see pictures of these men fighting in the trenches, a technique that was very new to them, it seems like it would be a lot more nerve wrecking to know that you could be in the trenches and someone could very easily sneak up on you, but then again, you also had a good hideout and protection

The picture of the tank attack impacted me the most. The picture's detail gave me a better view on how chaotic life was during WWI. It made me feel like I was there at the time! and the video of the shellshock victims made me realize how much of an impact the war had on their lives! i was very shocked when i saw that video!(pun!!!!)

The first link didn't work for me; it gave me some kind of warning: 'Die angegebene Seite konnte nicht gefunden werden.'

on the second i looked at the guns of the great war gallery, which consisted of huge artillery weapons with soldiers gathered around them and on top of them. Since guns of this size and power were very new during this first of industrial conflicts, these pictures reflect the pride which soldiers felt for their powerful weapons, these "Big Guns".

The picture: "French soldiers firing over their own dead" shows soldiers in the trench aiming across their own dead soldiers like they aren't even there. The conditions are so terrible that even their own dead soldiers seem to have no effect on them. They all look in a daze.

The shell-shock video was very different. I thought that it was mind-blowing about how may of the men at war had lost their legs. The men seemed unreal and the video seemed almost a joke, like the man afraid of the uniforms, but the traumatic event had really changed the soldiers.

Well I must say each picture has its power and each gives a brief window into the hell that is war. I was most disturbed by the images of the men digging trenches in masks and the men sleeping in the trenches. Both were strange because the men digging the trenches were like Shinigami just looming in a field of death fortelling of the future ahead of the trenches. As for the picture of the men sleeping it is a dreamless sleep that gives you no rest and does not allow you to temporarily escape the bloodstained field where everywhere you look is either a nightmare or a potential death trap.

This is interesting I fell like I couldn't make it in those trenches

these pictures really helped me see what all these men had to go through for their country. I thought it was really hard to see what some of these men had to go through and i could never think of being in that same situation

The picture called The Red Cross on duty in the trenches really impacted me. It shows how cruel the War was which caused by the invention of new weapons.

My favorite picture was on the third link with the Canadian soldiers going up to the first line. First of all, i liked it best because I thought it was a great photograph but it also showed how the soldiers provided throughout the winter.

the new technologies brought about by the industrial revolution made for new weapons that were able to inflict destruction on the battlefield that had never been seen before. the world had never experienced such loss from a single war.

The pictures allow the viewer, especially one who did not grow up in the early 1900s, to feel what the soldiers felt and to experience what the people felt. Now there are so many new technologies being invented that the effect is not the same as it was at the beginning of the 20th centurey. The picture i most enjoyed was of the trenches, expressing how modern warfair had been stripped of it glory and prestige.

all of the pictures made me try to imagine what it would be like. war was often called an "adventure" for the young men. I can't think of anything that could make more of an impact on a young man than fighting for ones country and fighting to survive. But, that is a much cleaner version than the reality. From these pictures, we can get more of an idea about the horrific things that the soldiers may have to endure.

Tank attack, second battle of the submarine was the pictured that caught my eyes. I think this picture has a unique distinction among others because of the was it's portrayed. This picture shows a lot of how people fought. This picture is great!
